Second September Installment of Short Story

Emily looked at James and decided to try and explain to him what had gone on in her mind that day, when her whole world turned upside down. And obviously a few other people's worlds too.
"I was standing at the bus station at 3.15 p.m. - so was everyone else - quite by chance. Then I began to wonder - did they all realise they were being captured by a mind - mine - at this point in time? Did they realise - no - that if something world-stopping were to happen at this point in time - that I could say well I was standing at the bus station at exactly the same time as it happened.
"It was a sunny day. I kept checking the board which tells you when your bus is due. Everyone was quietly thinking their own thoughts - no doubt - about their own lives. But I wasn't. I was thinking existentially about the way we were all doing what we were doing at that point in time. Like frozen statues in a time warp. I had a bent to do that. Like taking photos over and over.  Who had moved and whose head had turned at what point in time. And what were all the rest of the world doing just then.
"Then of course it happened. Wham. But I only knew all this later, much later, as I sat down to a meal of boiled, new, minted potatoes, cold mutton and home-grown peas. I looked up as the six o'clock news began and saw that what had happened at the bus station was real after all. Not a day-dream or something I'd imagined. Then the reality of that day hit me."
James was staring at me with a puzzled expression.................. (to be continued)

Short Story continued (September)

Once Emily arrived at work, she immediately knew she'd be having a very different kind of day. She viewed what had to be done and realised with astonishment how easy it was. Not only that but the work which would usually last all day, she now knew she could do within one hour at the most. That posed a problem because her workmates would wonder at her new ability. But if she stretched out the work to fit the eight hour day she'd be bored stiff. This was a new dilemma.
So after finishing her work effortlessly in record time, Emily told her manager she had some business to attend to and would be back later. She'd already had a phone-call from the husband of the woman who'd disappeared at the bus station. Now she'd be able to meet up with him and tell him what she'd seen.
They met in a small cafe in a shopping mall not far from the hospital. Emily saw a worried looking man looking all around him so went straight up to him. "Hello, sir, I'm Emily. Can I get you a coffee?"
He looked relieved to see her. "James," he said, holding out his hand. "I'm so glad you could come. I've been worried sick about Annabel and the police tell me there's nothing more they can do. My wife seems to have vanished."
The waitress came over and they both ordered flat-whites.
"As I said, James, I did see your wife drop her hand-bag and the next time I looked she was gone. It all happened in a flash. If only I could help you.........."

Short Story Continued (August)

Next morning, Emily read in the paper, "Woman tells of experience with aliens. There are aliens in Godzone, she is reported to have said, but couldn't add any further information. Others have rung into radio stations and TV news, saying they also experienced something strange yesterday. All the stories were different but the common thread was that something unusual had happened. Talk-back radio has been inundated with calls right through the night telling of an assortment of weird things people said they either felt, saw or heard. The prime-minister himself is telling everyone to calm down. He will be the first to know if there is anything to worry about. He advised people to carry on with their normal lives. But the families of those who went missing at the bus station are adamant their loved ones have simply vanished into thin air. We want answers they said."
Emily put down the paper. She felt decidedly different today. Kind of lighter and less concerned about the things she usually worried about. Like being late for work. Today she didn't care as she took her time with breakfast and fed the cat who was purring loudly and rubbing his head against the table leg. Before leaving the house, she sneaked a look through the window to make sure there were no reporters lurking about and then walked up the road to the bus stop.

Short Story continued

Emily tried to take in what was happening but at the same time she was terrified. This wasn't the world she knew. She looked out into the street and the usual business of traffic was absent. But then she saw someone running down the street followed by a group of people. They were all coming towards her and then she recognized the man being chased - it was Gerry Brownlee. He was a fast runner. Emily was impressed as she watched the group run past. The people chasing were all different ages, mostly older, some waving umbrellas and rolled-up newspapers, shouting as they went. Then she realized there was still a journalist standing beside her and he was asking a question.
"Did you see any aliens?" he asked her, holding out a small voice recorder.
"No, nothing at all," Emily answered. "How could we have aliens in Godzone? This is a peaceful country."
"But you witnessed something very strange," the journalist persisted. "You are one of the few who were there."
"But I have no idea what caused it. I'm just as confused as you are," she said.

July Story Beginning by Genesis Cotterell (Indie Author)

Hi Readers & Writers,
There was something about this morning. I took an early walk and birdsong infused the predawn and sang to me the beauty of life. The sky gradually became washed with the first rays of sunlight.  The rain had cleansed and refreshed everything and now it was like a new beginning.
Later at the bus station we all stood, waiting. I imagined this is how it would be described later. Everyone was just standing there, as if frozen in time and space when the event happened. No one knew or had any foreshadowing of what was to come. The stillness was eerie. It was as if we were all in a bubble, far removed from any disaster.
After some hours the survivors were able to calmly state where they were and how it was so sudden. They were calm because nothing had happened to them. Certain ones disappeared, that was true, but not in a terrible way. It was like, hey, they were there a minute ago and now they’re gone.
“Please tell us what happened,” they were asked by journalists, frantic for the story. But no one could tell them anything, until one small, rounded woman, wearing glasses said something which caused the journos to flock towards her.
“The ground moved,” the woman said. “It kind of tilted. I thought it was me, but it was everyone. We were all leaning left but it only lasted a second or two. Then we were upright again.  Some of us were no longer standing there.”
“So it was like an earthquake?” one keen journalist asked, thinking of Christchurch.
“No, nothing shook, just tilted. I remember seeing a lady drop her handbag. I looked around and when I looked back, she was no longer there. It had only taken a second.”

Say hi to beezeebooks.com

Kia Ora to writers and readers from NZ and around the world,
This month I'd like to tell you about beezeebooks.com a new website for book promotion started by Mike Smith. There are many interesting books on this site, plus some great author interviews. If you're keen to read my own interview please click here.

Now that the winter is setting in, it's a great time for both writing and reading. I'm currently reading a book first published in 1993 called Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden. It's the first of seven books in The Tomorrow series, written for young adults, but can still be enjoyed by adults too.
Happy reading........
